கோவில் சுருக்கம்
In the middle of Mumbai’s constant movement, Shree Siddhivinayak Ganapati Temple is a place where devotees come to begin, to pray and to seek Ganesha’s blessings before an important step in life. The temple stands at Prabhadevi and was first consecrated on 19 November 1801. What began as a small shrine has become one of the city’s most recognised centres of Ganesha devotion. The heart of the temple is the black-stone murti of Shree Siddhivinayak. Its trunk curves to the right, a feature that immediately distinguishes the image. The four-armed Ganesha holds a lotus, an axe, sacred beads and a bowl of modaks. Riddhi and Siddhi stand on either side, representing prosperity, fulfilment and spiritual well-being. For many devotees, these details are not simply artistic features; they are part of what makes darshan here deeply personal.
வரலாறு
The official Temple Trust records the first consecration of Shree Siddhivinayak on 19 November 1801. The original shrine was modest, built around the black-stone image that remains the focus of worship today. Over time, the number of devotees grew and the temple was expanded and renovated to accommodate a much larger flow of pilgrims. The present complex has been designed around darshan. The sanctum has three main entrances, each about 13 feet high, allowing devotees in the main hall and mezzanine area to see the deity. A gold-plated dome crowns the temple and has itself become a familiar part of the Siddhivinayak skyline.
புனித மரபு
Lord Ganesha is traditionally worshipped at the beginning of important undertakings and revered as Vighnaharta, the remover of obstacles. This gives Siddhivinayak a special place in the lives of devotees who visit before a new venture, examination, marriage, journey or other important moment. The form worshipped here is especially recognisable because the trunk of the black-stone murti curves to the right. Riddhi and Siddhi flank Ganesha, while the four hands hold a lotus, axe, sacred beads and modaks. The Trust also notes an eye-like mark on the forehead of the deity resembling the third eye of Shiva.
முக்கியத்துவம்
Why is Siddhivinayak Temple so famous? Its importance comes from a combination of living devotion, more than two centuries of recorded history and the distinctive form of Shree Siddhivinayak worshipped here. The temple is not simply a Mumbai landmark; it remains an active place of prayer visited by large numbers of devotees throughout the year. Tuesday has particular importance in Ganesha worship and is one of the temple’s busiest days. Sankashti Chaturthi and Angaraki Sankashti Chaturthi also draw especially large crowds. The temple’s architecture has evolved around this devotional reality, creating multiple ways for pilgrims to receive darshan even when the inner areas are busy.
கட்டிடக்கலை
The present temple is a multi-storeyed structure organised around the sanctum sanctorum. Three tall main entrances to the sanctum improve visibility of the deity from the central hall, while a mezzanine viewing area helps accommodate devotees during crowded periods. The gold-plated dome above the shrine is one of the building’s most recognisable features. The design is practical as well as devotional: circulation and viewing areas were planned to allow more pilgrims to receive darshan without losing the sanctum as the visual and spiritual centre of the temple.
கோவில் நேரங்களும் தரிசனமும்
திறந்திருக்கும் நேரம்
- Wednesday to Monday: Regular darshan begins after the morning Kakad Aarti; the Trust publishes breaks for naivedhya and evening aartis.
- Tuesday: A special early-morning schedule applies and crowds are usually heavier.
- Sankashti Chaturthi: A separate darshan and aarti schedule applies around moonrise; verify the current Trust schedule before visiting.
For a first visit, plan around the day of the week rather than assuming every day follows the same pattern. Tuesdays and Sankashti observances can be considerably busier. The Temple Trust publishes separate schedules for regular days, Tuesdays and Sankashti Chaturthi. Because aarti, naivedhya, special pooja and festival arrangements can change, check the Trust’s current schedule before leaving for the temple. Devotees are also asked by the Trust to keep mobile phones switched off before entering and to dress in a manner appropriate to the temple.
