The temple complex reflects contributions across several periods of Tamil history, including major Chola patronage and later additions. Chidambaram became an important centre of Nataraja worship in South India.

Chidambaram is traditionally revered as the Akasha or space shrine among the Pancha Bhoota Sthalams. The temple is also associated with the Chidambara Rahasya and worship of Shiva in manifest and formless symbolism.
