मंदिर सारांश
The Brihadisvara Temple at Gangaikonda Cholapuram is a monumental Chola-period Shiva temple and one of the three properties that form UNESCO’s Great Living Chola Temples.
इतिहास
The temple at Gangaikondacholisvaram was built by Rajendra I and completed in 1035. It reflects the imperial Chola period and the development of the royal centre at Gangaikonda Cholapuram.
महत्त्व
The temple is both an active place of Shiva worship and a major monument of Chola history. Together with Brihadisvara at Thanjavur and Airavatesvara at Darasuram, it represents the architectural and artistic achievements of the Chola tradition.
वास्तुकला
Its Dravidian composition is distinguished by a soaring vimana with a graceful upward curve, monumental stone construction and refined Chola sculpture.
