How to reach Haridwar
By rail
Haridwar Junction is a major railway gateway to the city. The station is not the bathing ghat itself. Expect an onward journey or walk according to your accommodation location and the access rules in force on your travel day.
By air
Jolly Grant Airport near Dehradun is the main regional airport option for Haridwar, followed by a road transfer. Confirm available flights and travel time with the operator.
By road
Haridwar is connected by road with Delhi, Dehradun and Rishikesh. Road approaches and city entry may be restricted on major bathing days. Do not rely on normal city-centre vehicle access during ceremonial gatherings.
Local transport and reaching the ghats
Har Ki Pauri and Brahma Kund are in Haridwar's riverfront pilgrimage zone. Some approaches are pedestrian-oriented even outside major festivals. On busy days, police may direct visitors to designated walking routes or holding areas.
Do not assume private taxis or buses can reach Har Ki Pauri directly during the Kumbh period. Check official traffic and public-transport notices shortly before arrival.
Read the sacred ghats and rituals guide for the differences between the main bathing sites.
Where to stay
Haridwar city
Accommodation near the central pilgrimage areas may reduce some travel, but the closest properties can still require walking and may face crowd controls. Check the exact approach to Har Ki Pauri and whether luggage can be brought to the property.
Outside the busiest riverfront area
Staying farther from the ghats can offer different accommodation options, but requires a reliable onward travel plan. Ask the property how guests reach the bathing area during official traffic restrictions, rather than relying on ordinary-day map estimates.
Book through a verified provider, obtain written confirmation, check cancellation terms and avoid sending advances to unverified contacts. This guide does not list live room availability or official camp allocations.
Travel-day checklist and safety
- Confirm the latest bathing-day schedule, local transport restrictions and permitted ghat entrances with the relevant administration.
- Keep identification, essential medication, drinking water and emergency contacts accessible.
- Travel with light luggage, wear suitable walking footwear and arrange a group meeting point.
- Follow on-site police and volunteer instructions; avoid barriers, restricted processions and unsafe river entry.
- Keep flexible time for delays, and avoid tight onward train or flight connections on major bathing days.
Check the dedicated bathing-dates guide for currently published dates and their confirmation status.
