The sacred story
According to the Bhagavata Purana tradition, Kansa imprisoned Devaki and Vasudeva after a prophecy warned that their child would end his rule. Krishna was born in Mathura and Vasudeva carried him across the Yamuna to safety in Gokul. Krishna later returned to Mathura and defeated Kansa.
